You’ll be hard-pressed to find a DIY skincare or haircare recipe that doesn’t include honey. “I don’t rely on facials; for me the best home remedy is honey—it cleans and softens my skin. I apply a light layer [of honey] to my skin, massage it for a few minutes and then wash it off,” said Kareena Kapoor Khan back in 2015. Conversely, “For an unhealthy scalp, add full-fat yoghurt, a teaspoon of honey, and one egg into a bowl. Mix and apply to the scalp as a mask. Leave it on for 30 minutes, then wash with warm water and baby shampoo,” shared Priyanka Chopra in an interview with US Vogue. It’s no surprise—because honey is an anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and antiseptic ingredient that heals, hydrates, soothes and restores. While it works well as a DIY ingredient, if you’d rather skip the mess in the kitchen, we put together an edit of our favourite skin and hair products with honey at the centre.
A body wash that’s fun to use
Bath and Body Works CocoShea Honey Bath & Shower Jelly
If there’s anything that can convince you to wake up a little quicker in the AM, it’s this body wash. The uniquely-textured Bath and Body Works CocoShea Honey Bath & Shower Jelly looks like a jar of honey, feels like bouncy silly-putty and smells like dessert. When lathered onto wet skin, the jelly softens into a rich lather, leaving you feeling deep-cleansed while skin is still soft and supple.
A corrective face mask for combination skin
Farmacy Beauty Honey Potion Renewing Antioxidant Hydration Mask
It’s easy to make a honey-accented product feel sticky, goopy or drippy, (which, if you’re slathering all over your face, is not ideal.) This light-as-air mask has honey, soothing propolis and amino acid-rich royal jelly that help alleviate dry skin, as it warms up and transforms into a thicker cream while on the skin itself. The formula also boasts glycerin to attract moisture from the environment. Manuka honey takes contains ultra-high levels of an antibacterial substance called methylglyoxal, making it an anti-acne elixir as well. The end result? Soft, silky cheeks and a balanced T-zone.
A hydrating balm for a lipstick-ready pout
Forest Essentials Kokum and Honey Luscious Lip Balm
A lip balm that tastes sweet and doesn’t feel tacky? That’s a winner. Forest Essential’s Kokum & Honey one is super hydrating, but doesn’t feel heavy or uncomfortable on the lips. Honey is able to boost skin turgor, (which is the ability of the skin to bounce back,) which results in plumped, refreshed lips that are ready to receive makeup.
A lifting and calming hydrator
Kiehl’s Pure Vitality Skin Renewing Cream
For mature skin prone to adult acne or dullness, try Kiehl’s Pure Vitality Skin Renewing Cream, which employs the elixir to calm inflammation and make acne look less angry due its osmotic effect on the skin. This rich blend of pure manuka honey and red-ginseng root visibly strengthens and smooths the face, leaving it with a veritable glow.
A multi-use hair elixir for dry, straw-like strands
Gisou Hair Oil
Just like honey can hydrate the skin, it acts as a light-weight conditioner and de-frizzer for strands. In the case of the Gisou Hair Oil, honey and a natural blend of minerals, vitamins, amino acids and antioxidants help to retain moisture and infuse shine and nourishment to strands by sealing in moisture into the cuticle. Use it as an anti-frizz serum just before you walk out of the door, prep tresses pre-heat styling or comb through all-over post shampoo for softened, malleable strands.
A comforting gel for tired eyes
L’Oreal Age Perfect Hydra Nutrition Manuka Honey Eye Gel
Around the thin skin near the eye, using a hydrating but soothing ingredient is paramount. Manuka honey is rich in antioxidants, which helps to neutralise free radicals and fight sun damage and fine lines. This one has a cooling rollerball that helps to massage the area and acts like a cushion for dry, flaky skin.
A moisturising but deep-cleansing face wash
Lancome Miel-en-Mousse Foaming Cleanser
This makeup remover is a transformative 2-in-1 cleanser and rinse-off face wash that contains acacia honey encapsulated in water. When applied onto the skin, the silky honey-like texture melts to dissolve makeup and impurities. Once emulsified with water, it transforms into a velvety mousse to remove any remaining residue on the skin. Even waterproof mascara is no match for this one, but the skin doesn’t feel parched after.
A two-in-one skincare and makeup hero
Skinfood Royal Honey Propolis Essence Foundation
Popped a zit? Got a scar? Struggling with redness? Using foundation can irritate the skin further while blocking pores. However, if you want a little coverage while tending to the issue at hand, this barely-there foundation has the texture of an essence, and sinks in almost immediately. The bee propolis works like an antibacterial agent while improving the skin’s stress response and healing scars or infections faster.
